A couple of weeks ago, my friend from Texas shared this video clip, and we enjoyed listening. Some were easy to recognize, while the others were hard. Some languages sounded almost the same for me, and others were first time for me to hear. How many languages can you recognize?
I got 11 right: English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese (off course!), German, Italian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Tagalog
Here is the test. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V16oh3eJ620
Have fun!

Chinese, French, Portuguese, German, Korean, Italian, Tagalog
Thank you for sharing!
English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Russian (guess), Japanese, German, Korean, Vietnamese (guess), Czech, and finally I said Afrikaans instead of Dutch because she said Africa π
Minor point but the title is misspelt - it should be languages
English, Chinese, SPANISH :D, French, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, German and Italian. As a bonus, I thought Finnish was Turkish. π
This was good fun! I got 14 right: English, Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, French, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, German, Korean, Turkish, Italian, Tamil, Thai. I see I wasn;t the only one saying Afrikaans for Dutch though! felt right into the trap on that one haha
This reminds me of a comment I heard in the Dutch show Wie is de mol. In one of those episodes professional actors are reciting poems and such in Afrikaans, and Pauline Cornelssen says the following:
Their task was to recognise as much as possible of what they said and write it down (transcribe). Obviously, they failed, too.
@schmamie Thank you for sharing! I didn't hear the word, Africa!
@MusiqueGraeme Thank you for pointing it out.
@Coral Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you recognized Japanese!! Thank you!
@nani_ Wow, I'm deeply impressed!! Thank you for sharing!
Nice to meet you, @edufuga. Thank you for sharing. That's interesting.
OMG! I made disastrous guesses! :DDD
I got right: French, Spanish, German (I guessed it from ich sound), Korean (I got it because Chinese and Japanese were checked earlier), Tamil (because Hindi was already played), and Arabic (because it's my tongue)
I mistook Russian for Italian (I don't know how and why!!), Farsi for Turkish, Hebrew for Danish, Sinhala for Tagalog. :))
By the way the English clip is from "The History of English" podcast. It's a really interesting podcast which helped me learn about word origins. Also the guy speaks pretty slowly (but with technical language) so it might be good for listening practice.
I got 12 right: English, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, French (unfortunately), Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, German, Italian, Korean (which was just a guess) and Vietnamese. I mistook Dutch for Afrikaans as well. They should've used a better audio clip for Swiss German because the poor man was clearly having a stroke π !
A few weeks ago I watched a similar video in which four people tried to guess the language. It was so hilarious!
@schmamie Is it just me, or is the narrator in the English clip also the narrator of the TED lessons? They sound strikingly similar.
@Double-Zee You did what?! You mistook my beloved language for Russian?! ππ²
@Double-Zee I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's very interesting everyone has misheard some languages to others. Thank you for sharing.
@schmamie I have no idea which video clip you are writing about, but than you! It must be fascinating to learn about the origin of English. Enjoy watching it!!
@Simone- You beat me! Congrats!!! Aw, now I got what Amie was writing about. Thank you, Simo. I also thought the same thing when I read ZZ's comment about Italian, hahaha.
@Simone- and @yumiyumayume, I always loved how Italian sounds and could distinguish it to some extent but pardon me, maybe I was in another world while listening to the audio! :DD
@Double-Zee I forgive you π.
We were just teasing you, @Double-Zee!
