Good evening dear readers and editors,
Today I'd like to ask you a question rather than write my own story. However, I need to describe the context of my question. I recently watched two new movies, produced in the US and making a diagnosis to the US in present. The first movie is 'One Battle After Another'. The second one is 'Eddington'.Frankly, 'One Battle ..' has left me pretty much indifferent. Otherwise, 'Eddington' has made a deep impression on me. I don't want to spoil your own impressions, so I'd like to postpone my analysis of these movies until my next post.
Why am I asking for your opinion here? Because a couple of months ago, two famous European film festivals took place. To my astonishment, the juries and many critics acclaimed 'One Battle After Another' and were quite harsh with 'Eddington'. Maybe because of my age, the mainstream action movies and thrillers bore me. However, I can be inspired by unique ideas or well-executed drama. At the beginning of this post, I said 'telling us about the present of the US'. These words are keys to my question.
To sum up all of the above, let me ask you if you've watched these movies and could share your thoughts with me? The critics said - and I agree with them - that both movies criticize the current state of American society. I would really appreciate hearing the opinion of actual Americans, because only you know the truth.
Thank you in advance - for editing and for answering.
First of all, let me say that your English writing has really improved! This was very well written for the most part. As for my impression, I haven't seen One Battle, but funny enough, last night I attempted to watch Eddington. It was hard because I can't stand the sight of Pedro Pascal, so it had a hard time holding my attention. My brother paid more attention (I was actually more interested in the solitaire I was playing on my iPad). When it was done, he got up and said he hated it... but to be fair, he can't stand Pedro Pascal either, lol. So I'm afraid that all I can offer here is edits, but I'm sure my fellow Americans will be happy to weigh in with their take. Great post! I can't wait to read the follow-up.
PS: The title is a little confusing. It doesn't really say anything or match the content of the post in any way.
I watched One Battle... yesterday, after my girlfriend told me I HAD to see it ASAP. I confess I don't share her excitement, although I admit the movie is fine, a technically acceptable mixture of entertainment and political correctness, the latter fortunately nuanced by the satyrical or the grotesque every now and then. I noticed in the final credits that the film is "inspired" in Vineland, a Pynchon novel from the Reagan era, that denounced the rightist policies both of Nixon and Reagan. I read the novel has several flashbacks that refer to leftist and revolutionary actions back in the 60s, by groups that I assume are the likes of "French 75" in the movie (which feels like a total anachronism in the present times, doesn't it? This is what baffled me the most in the movie.) I think the almost unanimous endorsement by the critic has mainly to do with its being an adaptation of a Pynchon novel
I'm no fan of Paul Thomas Anderson either, btw. I'll give a try to Eddington, thanks
@CocoPop: the title is from this old Soviet animated movie: https://rutube.ru/video/112aa24790c656ddd927816505c88a98/
Heavens! How interesting. That's worth explaining at the bottom of the post — I don't think any non-Russian would've gotten that reference. Thank you!
Sorry for the title. It was a joke to myself.
