I'd love to ask you— why do you study other languages? What's your purpose to learn them?
I recently heard that the Apple's new AirPods Pro3 earbuds will translate foreign languages in people's ears in real time. In addition, transcripts of conversations will automatically appear on the screens of users' devices. That means the new AirPods Pro3 will act as your interpreter, and you can read the contents of the conversations immediately.
When I heard the news from my friend from Texas, I thought I don't need to study Italian once I get the new AirPods Pro3. Then, we talked about why we still want to keep learning our target languages.
My friend said that by learning other languages, we can learn about their culture, histories, and values. I agree with him. He and I've been talking over for 18 years, and we've both learned so much from each other. I've enjoyed learning about American culture from him, and vice versa. When I first started chatting with him, I couldn't catch up with him at all because he loves having deep conversations. I now understand conversational English well, and it's become huge self-confidence. I believe that learning languages helps us improve ourselves because it takes time, patience, effort, and something that not everybody is willing to put in. Only those people who don't mind making efforts can truly achieve it. My friend also said real conversations involve gestures and eye contact, which help build better relationships and trust. I also heard that learning languages helps train our brains, and we can improve memory and focus.
We discussed several benefits, but deep down I know the real reason. I simply love English and communicating with my friends in it. That's it. I know how much fun it is to communicate in English, and that’s why I’d love to experience the same joy with Italian too.

I dread that this new technology is going to put interpreters out of work in the near future. brrrrrr
At least for the moment, machine translation is much, much worse than a real human's translation. But I'm not sure how long that will last. I learnt French because I have family who don't understand English. Now I'm learning Japanese just because it's fun! I like the music and want to understand the lyrics. I like the movies and want to watch without subtitles. I like the games and books and want to play and read their original versions.
There are many nuances that you can't really translate properly and that the only way to truly understand would be to actually learn the language. Its not like the machine translation wouldn't work though, but I think there is still value on learning the language. Plus its fun 😄
@CocoPop Yeah, they'll definitely loose their jobs. It's sad.
@schmamie Machine translations used to be horrible, but we can't say that anymore. It's getting better and better.
You have some great reasons to study Japanese. Keep it up!
@chicharron I totally agree with you.
