Local Dish for Cold Days in Japan Part 2

The weather in Japan has turned cold again, and we tend to eat special dishes to warm ourselves up. Since I introduced hōtō last time, today I'd like to introduce kiritanpo.

Kiritanpo is a local dish from Akita Prefecture, but thanks to online shops, we can get the ingredients so easily. The original version uses chicken, but I use pork because my husband prefer it.

I chopped various vegetables and made a hot pot with vegetables, mushrooms, pork and kiritanpo.

Place all the ingredients in a large pot and pour in the broth, which is made from fish and seaweed. Add some soy sauce and mirin (a type of cooking sake) and simmer the pot.

It's getting ready to eat! All the ingredients have turned soft.

In Japan, we have a saying, 猫舌(ねこじた nekojita, cat tongue) to describe people who have a sensitive tongue against hot food and drinks. I'm certainly 猫舌. Since I can't eat or drink anything too hot, I always have to wait for it to cool down. Usually, most babies have sensitive tongues, but as we grow up, gradually our tongues get used to hot food and drinks. Unfortunately, I still have "a baby tongue", lol. Even so, I love eating hot dishes.
