The weather in Japan has turned cold again, and we tend to eat special dishes to warm ourselves up. Since I introduced hōtō last time, today I'd like to introduce kiritanpo.
Kiritanpo is a local dish from Akita Prefecture, but thanks to online shops, we can get the ingredients so easily. The original version uses chicken, but I use pork because my husband prefer it.
I chopped various vegetables and made a hot pot with vegetables, mushrooms, pork and kiritanpo.
Place all the ingredients in a large pot and pour in the broth, which is made from fish and seaweed. Add some soy sauce and mirin (a type of cooking sake) and simmer the pot.
It's getting ready to eat! All the ingredients have turned soft.
In Japan, we have a saying, 猫舌(ねこじた nekojita, cat tongue) to describe people who have a sensitive tongue against hot food and drinks. I'm certainly 猫舌. Since I can't eat or drink anything too hot, I always have to wait for it to cool down. Usually, most babies have sensitive tongues, but as we grow up, gradually our tongues get used to hot food and drinks. Unfortunately, I still have "a baby tongue", lol. Even so, I love eating hot dishes.

That looks so good!
I love fish and most seafood but I don't eat pork, sheep, goat etc! I'd go with having the chicken version. :)
The kiritanpo look like chikuwa. You can't get either in the UK. This is a pity as I used to use to chikuwa for my "seafood" curry. Chikuwa, fish sticks, veg, Golden Curry roux. Hmm. Now I'm hungry. Strangely British people call Japanese curry sauce "katsu curry" even if it isn't served with katsu. The irony being that the Japanese word katsu is a transliteration of on English word.
Hi, ZZ @Double-Zee Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I don't eat sheep and goat either because we don't have the culture. How about cheese? Do you eat goat or sheep cheese? In Japan cheese isn't so popular either, so most people don't et goat or sheep cheese either.
I don't think I'd feel comfortable having goat or sheep cheese!
Cow cheese is very popular in Egypt. There's also buffalo cheese but it's more expensive and it's often homemade.
@t4up3 Haha, I had the same thought when I saw kiritanpo for the first time. Kiritanpo is much taller and larger. It's made from rice. Using chikuwa for seafood curry sounds delicious!
I've never tried "Wagamama", but I saw the restaurant last year while traveling in the UK. My British friend told me that because of Wagamama, katsu curry is really popular. It's interesting because katsu curry isn't popular in the States at all.
@Double-Zee Wow, Buffalo cheese! I've never heard it before. Thank you for sharing. I've had buffalo meat once in the States. It tasted similar as cow meat.
