I just had a job interview for an English teacher position. I used to teach in language institutions, but stopped because the the pay was too low.
So, today, my spoken English wasn't all that bad, but I kind of felt like I was talking like my students and my proficiency wasn't as high as it used to be.
Maybe I was more confident before. I was late, too. π I thought it was at 4, but it was actually at 3, and at 2:50, I was looking for the address in my messages and noticed I was late. I got an Uber right away. The Uber was late too. The driver didn't know this part of the city. And by the way, he was interested in the area and asked me lots of questions as if I was his realtor.
Where was I? Oh yeah, so I got to the interview half an hour late. The interviewer's English was really good. I've been to lots of interviews before, but most of the interviewers spoke Fenglish, i.e. English with a thick Persian accent. This lady was so good that I felt comfortable around her, but she asked me if I had an IELTS certificate. I didn't have one, so she asked me IELTS questions, and I answered the way I speak normally.
I think IELTS is all about showing off advanced vocabulary and the use of uncommon phrases. Of course, I wasn't good enough for IELTS even though I'm familiar with its techniques.
I'm going to have a demo tomorrow, but I wish I'd been on time today. Now, I have to be stressed out until tomorrow after having lost some of my confidence during the interview and maybe after seeing my mistakes on this post. π
Hey, Zobayda! Good luck tomorrow! But don't be late. π Your Persian accent is part of your identity. There's nothing wrong with it. Being late isn't.π (May I recommend you watch one the Max Amini's shows to warm up your English before your interview? He's Iranian-American and his English is contagious)
Hi, Coral! I just watched Max making fun of a scientist on Instagram. π
Great! Let me know if it works.
Obviously, there's stuff to work on, but your English is excellent! I agree that an accent is charming as long as it's not so heavy that you can't be understood. Good luck tomorrow!
Good luck with you
Thank you, guys!
Good luck tomorrow. May the gods of the English language be with you πΏπ.
Thanks, Simone! π
