One of my American friends sent me a picture of a snake about a week ago. His sons found it somewhere. It had dried up, actually. I commented that I hadn't seen a snake in years. Today I went for my usual walk in a place near a river with a lot of trees and bushes. To come across a snake there is a rare thing. We don't have many snakes in our region. As I was walking I was thinking, "I need to be careful because I'm walking near the river, where snakes like to hang out." I couldn't understand why that thought crossed my mind because I had never thought that way when I walked there before. But in the case, I was careful and was looking at the ground where I was walking. And about ten minutes later, when I was walking down the path with bushes on both sides, all of a sudden, a medium-sized snake crossed the path from one bush to the other just in front of me. I was shocked not by the snake itself, but by the warning that crossed my mind and that came true. I've never experienced anything like that. I've never predicted something that came true. I've never had any intuition in my life. I can't imagine how this could happen. This got me thinking that there might be a power that's more powerful than the human mind.
I was walking on the streets in my neighborhood and saw a tiny snake. It was probably about a foot long. I was terrified. I had seen an even smaller snake that was already dead in my neighborhood once before but I'd never seen a live snake in my neighborhood!
@Sunflower1234 Great edits!
Neither of you would last a day in Florida! 😂 Every time I walk out of the house, I see at least three snakes, to say nothing of the iguanas, alligators, and other critters the grace our state.
@CocoPop You are right about that! I would never go to Florida just because of all the critters there! My brother and his wife went there on their honeymoon and I was worried the whole time that they might get eaten by an alligator or come back missing a hand, like Captain Hook!
Hahahaha, you just made me spit up my coffee 😂 First they get hitched, then they get hooked 🤣 And where pray tell do you live with such a pitiful lack of reptiles and critters?
@ctjan better title: My First Premonition || Your intuition is what usually leads you to have a premonition about something that may happen. I'm sure you've had lots of intuitions in your life, but this is your first actual premonition. Your intuition kicks in every time you make a decision; something tells you to do this and not do that, for instance. I'm sure before you got married, your intuition said This is the girl for you! and you decided to propose. So this can't have been your first intuition per se. But the fact that your intuition was correct and resulted in something tangible in the physical world makes this experience with the snake more of a premonition, in my opinion. Let me know if this doesn't make sense to you and I'll explain it further. I'd also be curious to know what you think of this analysis, @Sunflower1234
@ctjan I see a definite improvement in your writing in this post. Your thoughts and words are more organized and succinct, and you seem to be expressing yourself more naturally in actual English, with little influence from your Russian. Great job!
@CocoPop I totally agree with your analysis of intuition vs premonition. I live in Idaho which is fairly free from scary critters. Although if I see another snake here I may move to Ireland. They are luckily snake-free thanks to St. Patrick!
@Sunflower1234 That's the only place you'll be safe! If you spy another snake, let me know and I'll be happy to start a gofundme to get you to Ireland! 😅
@CocoPop lol! Thanks!
Thanks. Everything is clear. I just didn't think carefully about the difference between intuition and premonition in Russian.
It's all good — we're all here to learn 👍🏻🤩
Can I join the club? If I saw a snake, I'd have a stroke.
Anyway, Ctjan, we both had a similar experience in that we both had a premonition. The only difference was the animal and the specific place; I was on the edge of a hill. What can I say. God chose to spare me that day. Maybe one day I'll write a post about it. I've never actually told anyone about this episode.
@Simone- Oh my God! Was it a snake? At least give us that. I’m not going to sleep from the suspense!
Last week I took my dog Nina for a morning walk in the park. We were walking on the bicycle trail and about five feet in front of us I saw a huge black racer snake crossing the path. It must have been seven foot long, no joke. They move beautifully and effortlessly but really fast. That’s why they’re called racers. I didn’t find out the least bit scary. It was magnificent to watch.

It might sound pathetic, but it was a dog.
Yo, that's some speed.
Ours was in no hurry. It took its time and crossed the trail. Even Nina was mesmerized by it.
A dog? I can’t wait to hear this! 😅
I'm too scared to even watch the video.
hahahaha It's just a YouTube short of a black racer racing... awaaaaaay from the camera 😉
That's what I thought it would be and why I'm not going to watch it!
hahahahaha You're missing out. It's sooo fast. But I guess you can take our word for it 😉 We'd hate to traumatize you needlessly 😜
I’d like to continue to believe that I can move faster than a snake. I don’t want to be disillusioned 😅
No need to worry. Humans can move faster than
deadsnakes 😆.@Sunflower1234 In that case, don't watch the short — that theory will go out the window lickety-split!
@simone- Very true!
I came across 'hunch'. It seems hunch has something similar to premonition.
hunch is actually closer to intuition. If you have a hunch about something, you instincts are kicking in and telling you which way to go on something.
So it's a bit like having a gut feeling.
Exactly:
How did you know that man was going to try to snatch your purse?
— I don't know. I just got a hunch when he was walking towards me, that told me to run into the nearest store.
And you me... I think in language learning it's always a good idea to know more than one way to say everything, so hunch is a good word for Alex to learn here.
Straight from your YouTube playlist Three Ways to Say 🤩.
For those interested, this is the YouTube playlist I'm referring to: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2ARI0UPusAN6WIEqOfkh0geKe1cLRSQ2&feature=shared .
Bingo! Thanks for the plug. And I really do believe that.
