Remember Isn't The Same As 覚える

by

I'm learning a lot from the posts by Japanese learners. They frequently make mistakes similar to the ones I make when I write in English, but from a different perspective. As an example, I frequently witness them using "覚える" when the proper verb is "思い出す.", so, I illustrated the difference between them. See the picture below.

Assuming you have a box of memory,

1. 覚える is the act of putting something in the box.

例文)さあ、漢字を覚えましょう。

2. 覚えている is the state of keeping something in the box.

例文)私のことを覚えていますか?

3. 思い出す is the act of taking something out of the box.

例文)知っている単語なのに、とっさには思い出せない。

My questions are:

  • Can the word remember be used for all of these cases 1 to 3?
  • Learn or memorize is more proper for the case 1?
  • How about the word recall?
  • What's the difference between remember and recall?

Thank you in advance!
