I just watched a tragic video on YouTube about a fatal accident during a rope-jumping experience in Brazil.
Maria was a young Brazilian college student that wanted to try rope-jumping. However, she had an unusual request: she wanted to be launched over the edge of the bridge "airplane-style." So, the three instructors lifted her above their heads and threw her off the bridge—or, unfortunately, hurled her to her death. You see, those three negligent idiots had forgotten to attach the rope to her harness. Sadly, Maria died shortly after emergency services arrived.
One of the participants recorded the moments leading up to Maria's jump. In the video, you can clearly see that there's no rope attached to her harness. The guy shooting the video noticed it too late; he yelled at the instructors just as they were throwing Maria off the bridge. Seriously, I've got to wonder what everyone was looking at.
To make matters worse, two of the instructors fled into the nearby forest. The police had to call in a military helicopter to track them down. No surprise they ran away—not one of the three instructors had any formal training, let alone a licence. To add insult to injury, the bridge had already been abandoned for safety reasons, so they had no business being on it.
Personally speaking, I could never entrust my life to someone else like Maria did. Of course, there are so many things out of our control that can go wrong, but making sure the rope is attached to your harness is the bare minimum.
Let me know your thoughts.
R.I.P. Maria.
That's the saddest thing I've read in a long time. What a senseless way to go. She put her life in the hands of dumb, dumber and dumbest and paid the ultimate price. It haunts me to think what must've gone through her head in those last moments when she realized she was careening towards sure death. Godspeed to you, Maria!
I also read the news online, and it was popular online for a while.
