Do you take a break and still feel tired?
You’re probably doing it wrong. Why rest alone doesn’t restore energy is an article that discusses this issue.
Taking a break and doing nothing doesn't help all the time. Our bodies aren't batteries that we wait until they run out of energy to start charging them by doing nothing. They are more like machines.
Research suggests that when you stay inactive for long periods, your body becomes less efficient and less ready to handle effort.
Mood and motivation also affect how active you feel. When you face changes in mood, you feel less energized. In addition, stress is an obstacle that stumbles you when you try to make the most of your break. When you lie down while scrolling your phone or overthinking, you still burn energy.
So how can we recharge our energy effectively.
- Some movement would be great. (I ride the bike or go for a walk.)
- If your mind still works during your break (yes, my mind does so quite often), do activities that calm it. (I spend quality time with my niece and nephew either at home or outdoors. Cooking, cleaning or doing laundry also works.)
- When you feel stressed, quitting what you’re doing isn’t of much help. Slow breathing, meditation (I tried it and failed) or venting (this works miraculously with me) are other methods to help your mind settle.
- Stepping away from all the activities and doing nothing isn’t the best approach all the time. Sometimes, you need to approach something you enjoy doing, something that brings you meaning and energy. (Volunteering is a great way to feel useful and keep holding into hope for me)
- Changing your routine, or the place where you do your activities might help sometimes.
Generally, pay attention to what helps you activate your power and put you back on track. Then, you can include it in the strategy of refreshing your energy.
