Adopting a New Family Member

A couple of days ago, my husband started talking about a Border Collie he had seen online. The dog was about five months old and has been sale at a pet shop in Nara, but it's still there. Nobody seemed to want it, so he'd love to see it.

When I heard it, I told him that he shouldn't go there because once he saw it, it would become hard to refuse it. I was against having another dog. We've been taking care of our grandson, and recently, our daughter got a promotion and she'll sometimes go business trips to the US. When she's on her business trips, I know we have to take care of our grandson because our son-in-law is also very busy. We don't have enough time to take care of a puppy.

My husband then shared some really sad stories about dogs left behind in pet shops with me. If nobody wants them, they are going to put down. If they were female, they would become breeding dogs and until going to die, they would force to produce babies. I've known these stories because our first black lab was also a dog left behind in a pet shop. Although I'll write more about her in another entry, when we found her, she was six months old.

I don’t like it when my husband tries to change my mind by appealing to my sympathy, but at the same time, I don’t want to ignore a situation where we might be able to help. In the end, his stories changed my mind, so we went to the pet shop in Nara today.

There was the Border Collie that my husband had talked about. He seemed to be sad and be tired to wait for somebody to pick him up.

When we first saw him, we made up our mind. We should take him and give him a comfy home. I have mixed feelings about pet shops, so we didn't adopt our second black lab from there. We looked up breeders. I really don't like buying living things to look around and choose which one is the cutest. They are living creatures and not products.

Anyway, I thought he should deserve a home, so we adopted him even though we've never kept a male dog before. We'll be more busy to take care of our new puppy and our grandson. I've heard Border Collies are so intelligent that they need to be well trained. Everything is new to us, but we'll work together and do our best to raise this puppy well.

There was another five-month-old dog who had been left behind. Fortunately, it was also adopted on the same day, and I was so relieved.

This pet shop also sold frozen food for dogs. There were from desserts like cakes to table dinners. I was amazed by the varieties.

From now on, I'll sometimes post our new dog, Kai, too.
