We are formed approximately 50% by genes and 50% by environment or memes. Meme is a term coined by Richard Dawkins by which we understand units of cultural information that spread from person to person through imitation and transmission. When we look back at the history, later we were much more limited by memes that society or high-position people were trying to indoctrinate us with. People did not have so much information at their disposal, and access to information was difficult, but the times have changed. Thanks to scientific progress, we don't even need to leave our home to have access to the best scientific information and it means that our freedom has increased. We are free to choose memes that will form us and we are even capable of changing our nature with the freedom of choosing what memes will define us. This is true freedom!
Even though this is the original meaning of 'meme', these days it means something different. The first change was to become a 'joke format'. There would be a character representing an idea, with a caption explaining the scenario. Here's an early example https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/all-the-things
Nowadays, 'meme' means basically anything that is a joke, or not meant to be taken seriously. I think the original meaning is still used in science?
Thank you for your interesting comment!:) Yes, the original meaning is still used in science. I personally was introduced to the term " meme" as phenomenon on social media, when I got social media account as a teenager and only later as I read " Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins I learned the original meaning of " meme".
