My husband and I held his parents' Buddhist memorial services last month and this month. My brother-in-law (my husband's brother) and his wife, our daughter and her family, and we got together at our family temple to remember the deceased, which is a part of our tradition.
We listened to the monk's sutra and cherished the Buddha's teachings. In our sect (Jōdo Shinshū), it's considered very important. After the service, we also listened to the monk's sermon.
When we visited the temple last month, it was decorated for the New Year. Since it was very pretty, I took several photos. Just as Christianity has many different denominations, Buddhism also has many different sects. Ours is Jōdo Shinshū and the temple is decorated in this way.
I guess it might be interesting for people from other countries, so I'd like to share it with you here.

QUESTION: Can most Japanese understand what priests chant? (古い日本語の掛け声ですか、それとも現代の日本語の掛け声ですか? / Are the chants in old Japanese, or modern Japanese?)
@T-Newfields Thank you for asking. Our chant is from Sanskrit. You can listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHFhqrMNn7s&list=RDHHFhqrMNn7s&start_radio=1
To be honest, it really doesn't make sense for us at all.
