The Return of The Prodigal Son

by

Hi there!

I've been absent from Journaly for a year, so that's why I chose this odd title.

Today I want to write about my latest achievement. After a year of study, practice, and several exams, I got my driving license.

In my opinion, there are two factors, that made my goal more challenging. The first one is everything took place in a big city in Poland. So, there were a lot of complicated maneuvers, traffic jams, and situations with trams (compared to a small city). The second factor is my late-middle-age and already-not-good memory.

The main process of learning to drive looks like three months of driving school and then you may sign up for the exam. I'm a bit ashamed of the fact that only my fifth exam was successful. Moreover, I got unexpected sympathy (and support) from the examiner. Thus, actually, the number of exams might have been more.

I feel a bit ashamed because I'm not so bad at driving car. I have a good sense of direction and I don't have any fear of driving like a lot of my friends. Nevertheless, my ability to not miss the important signs and consider several factors simultaneously was developing very slowly. Also, I had a terrible driving instructor from the first school. He kept saying I drive very confidently and almost never explained why we should perform a particular maneuver in a specific way. As a result, I spent twice as many hours (and money) with different instructors from another driving school to retrain me properly.

In closing my short post, I'd say now I have an even more complicated challenge before me. I need to become a "driver in action". So, all responsibility and control are now on me. That’s a bit frightening...
