Since last July, the Japanese government has begun to oblige(make) retailers to charge shoppers for plastic bags at the checkout. At last, yes, that was finally done in Japan as well. As a consumer, to be honest, it's a little bit inconvenient to have to take my shopping bag everywhere, but I can easily imagine that the new habit will make a huge difference from society which is flooded with plastic bags. Even if it's just a trivial step compared to the serious environmental situation of the Earth, we have no choice but to do what we can in our daily life.

That's good news, @Ketil ! And well done, I see just a few small mistakes but your report is easy to read and understand.
Hi Ketil. I feel the same way as you... a bit inconvenient, but something that is absolutely necessary and we just get used to the new normal. In Canada, we have been paying for plastic bags at the grocery store (and some other stores also) for quite a few years now. So I have been using reusable bags since they started that. And soon (this year or maybe it is next year), the government has mandated that stores get rid of single-use plastic bags COMPLETELY!!
Thank you for your feedback, Violili and A_C! Each one is very helpful. I'm glad to hear the advanced commitment in your country, A_C. The Japanese government may also mandate that stores get rid of single-use plastic bags soon!
