I think almost everyone in Japan has tried matcha-flavored desserts or drinks, but I guess that about half of us have never actually tasted proper matcha. I was one of those people until about ten years ago. My first experience with true matcha was at an event held at a nearby temple. I remember being amazed at how delicious it was — and even more surprised by its effect on me.
I have ADHD, so I tend to react strongly to any kind of drug, for better or worse. In a way, I think tea is a kind of drug too. After drinking that first cup of matcha, my mind suddenly felt clear, my senses sharpened, and yet I was completely calm. It was a feeling of 明鏡止水 (meikyōshisui) — a phrase from the Chinese classics that means clear mirror — still water.
Since then, I’ve made a habit of whisking and drinking matcha regularly. I’ve never quite recaptured that initial experience. It seems like something that only happens the first time. However, I still get about 5% of that 明鏡止水 feeling whenever I drink it. Matcha isn’t cheap, but it’s my only luxury, so it's a simple pleasure I sometimes allow myself.

One of my favorite "get to know you" questions is: "In what area of your life do you choose luxury?" I think getting really high quality matcha is a great answer for that :)
Personally, matcha isn't my favorite, however the only way I was able to try try matcha here was to try making it myself. I tried to order "high quality" matcha, but who knows if it was any good. I'm also not sure I prepared it the right way. Maybe if I try it made by a professional, I would like it better.
I really love 煎茶 and ほうじ茶
Also, thanks for teaching me that 四字熟語. I always like finding new ones :)
Matcha is definitely an acquired taste and I absolutely love it. I like it hot, but I live in South Florida, so. my favorite way to drink it is iced with lemon and honey. A friend of mine drinks it iced with a splash of pineapple juice and lemon and it's also delicious.
I've heard that some people with ADHD react to caffeine in the opposite way — instead of feeling energetic, they might get calm and even sleepy. Maybe that's why matcha has this calming effect on you?
@Ersatzjello I also love 煎茶 and ほうじ茶! As you know, they're more mild, especially ほうじ茶. I think the reason I only get about 5% of that feeling from my usual matcha is partly due to the difference in quality or brand, even though I choose quite high quality one. But honestly, I’m fine with that. I don’t need to feel that way every day and I have no way of knowing what brand it was.
@CocoPop Lemon, honey, and pineapple juice! That sounds delicious. I’ll try it out this summer—Japanese summers really need something refreshing like that.
@BalaGi I've heard that, too, but in my case, I don't get sleepy. I can't drink coffee because when I drink coffee, I feel a brief sense of euphoria, but soon after, my heart starts racing and I become restless. Tea doesn’t make me feel restless, and matcha is the best for helping me feel calm and I don't feel any side effects.
