My holiday has just finished. The weather was lovely the whole time, and I was able to spend the time feeling refreshed. At the moment, there’s an art festival happening in my area, attracting many visitors from both Japan and abroad. Thanks to that, there are more buses and ferries, which makes it easier for locals like me to hop between the islands.

Going around the islands is really fun as each island has its own culture. I especially like the stone walls and fishing villages. They match the shape of the land and feel very special. The last island I visited had a stone lighthouse with no paint. It looked very natural and beautiful. I sat on the beach below it, watching ships come and go, and enjoyed a quiet moment.

During the festival, there are indoor and outdoor artworks. You don’t need a ticket to enjoy the outdoor ones. Many outdoor works stay there all year, so I sometimes visit in winter too. But I also enjoy seeing the islands when they are busy during the festival. It feels exciting and different.

By the way, my favourite artwork is called Sora-Ami. It looks light and open, and it fits really well with the view of the sea.

休みが終わりました。今回の休みは天気が良くて気持ちよく過ごすことができました。私が住んでいるところでは、今、芸術祭が行われていて、日本の中だけでなく外国からもたくさんの人が来ています。そのおかげでバスやフェリーの数が増えて、地元に住んでいる私にとっても島を回りやすくなっています。

島をまわると、それぞれの島にある文化のちがいを感じられて、とても面白いです。特に、島の地形に合わせて作られた石垣や漁村のようすが島ごとにちがっていて、それがとても魅力的だと思いました。最後に行った島には石で作られたペンキをぬっていない灯台がありました。自然のままの見た目がとてもきれいで心に残りました。私はその灯台の下にある砂浜に座って、行き来する船をながめながらゆっくりした時間を楽しみました。

芸術祭の間は、屋内の作品だけでなく外にもたくさんの作品があって、チケットがなくても楽しめます。外にある作品の多くは芸術祭が終わったあとも見ることができるので、私は冬に行くこともあります。でも芸術祭の時期に、にぎやかな島を歩くのも特別で楽しいなと思います。

ちなみに私が一番好きな作品は「そらあみ」というインスタレーションアートです。海の風景にとけこむような、ひらけた気持ちになる作品です。
