A Short Translation from Italo Calvino's Il castello dei destini incrociati

I came across an English version of this book many years ago, published by Picador. I must still have it somewhere. As a homage to Calvino, one of the authors I most admire, I tried this short translation. (Free Spanish version from the Italian below.)

"Is this your town?", the youngster would have asked.

"It's actually yours,"--a better answer he couldn't have got--"here you'll find everything you ask for."

Thus caught off guard, he'd hardly be able to utter a sensible wish. Heated up after climbing to that point, he'd just say: "I am thirsty!"

And the angel on the throne: "You just have to choose which one of these wells you fancy to drink from," and he pointed at two identical wells that opened up in the desert square.

The youngster--you just need to glance at him to notice how utterly lost he feels again. The crowned power in front of him now brandishes a scale and a sword, the attributes of the angel that guards over decisions and balances from the heights of the constellation of Libra.
