Bakkar is an animated series that was broadcast every Ramadan during the late nineties. The major characters were Nubians and the series was telling stories about the characters' adventures in Egyptian Nubia and different parts of Egypt. It touched on the migration of Nubians. For the first time, we could see dark-skinned cartoon characters without pigeonholing them as naïve or silly. The singer of the opening and closing songs was also an Egyptian Nubian.
Whenever I hear Bakkar songs, I’m reminded of those days when we used to have Ramadan Iftar as a family, sitting on the floor and watching TV together. These years were before our life had turned upside down. A few years later, my mother got trouble with her knee and found it difficult to sit on the floor, and later on, she got dementia. My sister got married and had children while my brother keeps looking for a chance to leave the country. And I’m here, on my own with my thoughts that strangle me day after day.
“He's Egyptian by heart and soul. The Nile runs through his veins.” The song said ingraining patriotism in us.
“Oh, my country! When am I going to grow up and make my dream true?” I used to sing along with the song, wishing to be an adult as fast as possible. Now, I wish I could travel back in time and live one of these days again!
I've watched Bakkar and I like it. My Egyptian friend sent it to me. Ramadan Iftar with family is precious, but we usually take it for granted until we get alone. Take it easy. It's a period in life everyone experiences.
It's normal we have ups and downs in our lives. Everybody has to go through tough times and we can't skip it. Hang in there! I hug you tight, my dear friend!
Thanks for your comment, @Zobayda! I'm trying not to beat myself up! Did you watch it dubbed or with subtitles?
@yumiyumayume, Thanks for your caring comment and the tight hug! Sending you a tight hug back! :))
@Double-Zee I watched it in Arabic without subtitles. 😅
Praying that you may know the comfort that you need in all the difficult times. :)
The song is lovely, and Bakkar is adorable.
@Zobayda, so now, you must have been fluent in Egyptian Arabic! 😜
Thanks for keeping me in your prayers, @MusiqueGraeme!
Thanks for reading and commenting on my post, @Akiko!
