A Preconception Of Having No Preconceptions

Most of what Uly teaches me isn't individual word pronunciation but phrasing. However, there were a few words he pointed out that I didn't pronounce correctly. One of them was photo. I didn't know the reason, but I repeatedly pronounced it too short. I've been thinking about the reason, and one thought occurred to me. I was affected by the katakana pronunciation of "フォト" that has no diphthongs.

I'm not a beginner, so I didn't think I would be affected by such a simple thing. Even junior high school students know how much it differs from English pronunciation. I thought I was done with it a long time ago. But I'm not. Wow, I was affected by it. I had a preconception of having no preconceptions about English pronunciation. Once I accepted that, the word photo just rolled off my tongue.

It's very interesting to discover my own preconceptions. It's actually one of the most enjoyable aspects of learning.
