A couple of weeks ago, I went to see an Edward Gorey art exhibition in Nara with a friend of mine. I've been a huge fan of his art ever since my friend from Texas introduced it to me. As soon as I saw the announcement for the exhibit, I knew I had to go.
His art reminds me of my favorite era, the Victorian era. When we entered the art museum, a large sign featuring his artwork welcomed us. I was already thrilled.
His original pieces were surprisingly small and incredibly precise. He drew only with pen and ink, rarely using colors. Although he created lots of picture books for children, his drawing often scared them. Adults seem to appreciate his work more, and I'm certainly one of them.
What I love most about his art is that he never tried to sugarcoat things just because he was creating children's books. I think it's really cool because he had a unique style as an artist. He wasn't concerned about whether young people would accept it and simply made what he loved. As an artist myself, I know how difficult it can be to stay true to one's vision like that.
Since the art museum didn't allow us take exhibition pieces' photos, instead I took some art posters there. You can get a sense of his art from these pictures.
After the exhibition, we stopped in one of my favorite restaurants to have lunch. I was happy to introduce it to my friend.
We enjoyed having yakuzen cuizine together.

Hi, @yumiyumayume . It seems to me that Edward Gorey loved humour and surrealism, and that he used characters in Victorian costume as an excuse to laugh in his illustrations. They present us with a scene that forces the viewers to be active in their art.
@druida Thank you as always for reading and commenting on mine. I think so too!
Thanks for introducing this artist. Many of his works are interesting.
@T-Newfields Tim-san, you are welcome, and thank you for correcting the post. I'm glad you like his art!
