What's the difference between swap, move and replace?
My friend asked me if I knew of any classroom games for kindergarten.
I told her to put some school supplies on the desk and ask the students to close their eyes. Then, she has to switch two items and ask them to open their eyes and tell her which ones she moved.
Is move the right verb here?
Imagine the items are lined up like this on the desk.
Pen. Pencil. Book. Ruler
Pencil. Pen. Book. Ruler
What have I done with/to the pen and the pencil here?
I think this is something basic that I don't know. Where do you learn confusing stuff like this as a learner? It's the first time that I've ever had to use this concept, although it sounds like a common thing.

"Move" is a general term that is just used when something is being put somewhere else. I could say "I moved my desk closer to the window to feel the breeze".
"Swap" is used when two things are being switched. I could say, "Do you want to swap trading cards later?" or "Do you want to swap places? I can't see the whiteboard from here."
"Replace" is when something is being used instead of something else. The first thing that comes to mind is the sentence, "The lightbulb burnt out so I replaced it with a new one."
Thank you, 🌻! So, is "I swapped the pen and the pencil" correct?
Yes, swapped is perfect.
In a Windows operating system, swap memory (or virtual memory) is used to expand the available memory by utilizing a part of the hard drive when the physical memory (RAM) is full. When there’s not enough RAM to handle all active programs, the operating system temporarily moves less-used data from RAM to a dedicated file on the hard drive called the pagefile. This process allows the system to keep functioning smoothly, as it frees up RAM for tasks that need it more immediately.
I had no idea about swap memory. 😅 Now, I won't forget it. ¡Gracias!
In this example, I'd say you switched the pencil and the book. So where do learners go to learn stuff like this? You get a lot from just reading books and listening to the language in videos, movies, etc., or you can come here and ask us? 😁
I hope you guys are always around and in the mood to answer my questions. 🙏😊
Hahaha, that's what we do!)))
