Yesterday was Father's Day in Japan, and my husband and I invited my parents, our daughter and her family to our house. Fathers from three different generations — my dad, my husband and our son in-law — got together, and we celebrated it with homemade sushi. Especially, since it was our son in-law's first Father's Day, we wanted to make it memorable for him.
To make good homemade sushi, my husband and I went to a fish market in our neighboring city and bought some fresh fish. I cooked five cups of Japanese sticky rice for the sushi. I mixed some vinegar, sugar and salt with the cooked rice to make sushi rice. We prepared seaweeds, the raw fish, the sushi rice, sliced cucumbers and a Japanese herb called shiso. I even baked two different kinds of homemade cakes too. I was busy, but I love seeing my family members' smiling faces.
Everybody enjoyed making their own version of rolled sushi with the ingredients, which I'd prepared while chitchatting. It was a lot of fun!

In Spain, we celebrate Father's Day on March 19th. According to Christian tradition, this day commemorates the feast of Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and the father of Jesus...
Hi, @druida. I know that different countries celebrate Father's Day on different dates. Ours is influenced by American culture, so we celebrate on the same day as in the US. Thank you for sharing your tradition. I love learning about different cultures.
Wow, what a nice Father's Day! Lucky men in your family! I love sushi — I can only imagine what it's like homemade.
Thank you! I guess it's really interesting to make your own sushi, great idea to try. Thanks again!
Hi, @CocoPop . Thank you as always for the corrections. You can imagine through my photo on my post. You can put the ingredients on sushi rice and roll them with nori. Don't forget to add wasabi!
Nice to meet you, @NataBold. Thank you for reading my post. You can have a homemade sushi party at your home! Try it. It's fun.
Great post, it was fun to read! Unrelated to linguistics, but do you have suggestions for making good sushi rice? Every time I try, it comes out too dense, sticky, and gummy. Never light and fluffy like at the restaurant :(
Nice to meet you, @pennypremonition Thank you for asking. After cooking the rice, put it in a sushi tub (It's better to use a sushi tub made by wood) , mix in vinegar and sugar, and fan it with a hand fan. That's my way to make sushi rice, and I hope it is useful to you too.
