SPOILERS!

I wouldn't be reading Shark Heart by Emily Habeck if it weren't in the original English. I appreciate the language practice a tad bit more than the story.

Shark Heart is a magical realism novel where the lines between the human and animal world are somewhat blurred.

Due to irreversible illnesses people can turn into different animals. Lewis is turning into a great white shark and one day must be released into the ocean. I currently am at one fifth of the novel and it seems shallow (pun unintended, but will remain). The idea is captivating, Lewis and Wren's love story could turn into a real tearjerker but I don't feel I know their hearts. I am reading about their hopes, dreams, plights, fixations and anxieties but I can't picture them as full-blown persons.

Yet, this book is still worth your while. Lewis and Wren are so different they sometimes spend a whole day alone in different corners of their home. Albeit, they are drawn to each other as the sea is "drawn" to the moon.

With Lewis's transformation Wren would be left alone bereft, so she wants to prepare for an aquatic life.

I am excited to finish this novel, but it won't have a special place in my heart.
