Wings & Walls

by

fiction

There 's been a fly in the room for the past three days. I've tried to shoo it away several times, but it keeps resisting. The door is closed, yet the windows are wide open. I don't get why it prefers to be inside rather than enjoy such a sunny day like today. I would, if I could, but I never go outside beyond these walls. I would feel lost and vulnerable. It would be different if I could fly, though. I'm sure that flying on your own changes your worldview. From the sky, everything looks insignificant, except for the things that really matter, like forests and rivers—the very things some like to mistreat so much.

Now the fly is on my computer screen . It's quite small and has whitish wings. I can't tell where its head ends and its body begins, but I can count its legs: two, four, and... five? Poor thing, it's missing a leg. Is that why you're here instead of outside? I totally understand ... I'm sorry I bothered you. I didn't know you were disabled. I bet you'd like to be a crab now, or maybe a starfish so your leg could grow back. So would I. There are no walls in the sea. If only we could both escape these walls and find our place in a world without barriers.
