Pan's labyrinth is my favorite film in the Spanish language and without a doubt the best film by director Guillermo del Toro.
The story takes place during the Franco's dictatorship in Spain. At the beginning it seems that there were two different stories that were happening at the same time, mixing the fantastic with reality, but in the end both stories come together for a wonderful ending.
The characters that impressed me most were Captain Vidal and Ofelia, his stepdaughter.
To me, Captain Vidal is one of the greatest villains in the history of cinema, his cruelty and power seems so real that you feel the anguish of his victims.
Ofelia is a strong character who rebels against the evil and pain that surrounds her and who, despite difficulties and personal mistakes, manages to do the right thing.
My favorite part of the film is the dialogue between the doctor and Captain Vidal, which is as follows:
- I don't understand, why didn't you obey me
- To obey just like that, for the sake of obeying, without questioning, that's something only people like you can do, Captain.
Do you know this movie? Did you like it? Which are your favorite films?
I enjoyed reading this description of the film! I've never heard of it but it sounds good. Also, you express yourself really well and in complex ways in English, and most of it sounds really natural :)
@UrsaRomero many thanks for correcting my writing in Spanish, much appreciated. I heard about this movie before, which was about 4 years ago. I am going to watch it too.
I like Pan's Labyrinth too!
Thanks E22, LingoBee and Julian for your comments, this site is wonderful, everybody helping each other
A very interesting, well-written and thought-out post. Thank you
Great writing! I like this movie a lot as well, and I'd completely forgotten that it's in Spanish! Cinema really transcends language, particularly a director like del Toro, who uses images so brilliantly.
Your English is very good. The suggestions I added are only minor. I have not seen Pan's Labyrinth but since I am learning Spanish, when I have the opportunity, I do want to watch it in Spanish.
This is a great post! I love El Laberinto del Fauno! I haven't seen any other movies directed by Guillermo del Toro. Besides being so wonderful to watch, I've found this movie helpful because (at least on the DVD for my region) it has both Spanish and English subtitles. I hope to someday be able to figure out all of the dialogue myself but it is great to have the Spanish subtitles. The ending really is wonderful :)
