When I was a child, the most common advice I had been given by elders about money was "Don't spend all your money. Try to save some of it in your piggy bank (and I had an actual piggy bank). You may need it at some point to buy yourself an expensive toy or something".
A few years after I graduated from college, I got my first job and I was given the same advice, but somewhat different now; "Don't spend all your salary - save a few bucks for a rainy day". However, the idea was the same.
Even back then, this seemed like horrible advice and as it turned out, I was right. Now I'm over 40 and I can share with you that even though I've lived from paycheck to paycheck all my life, it's been a happy life without the need for an emergency fund or a backup financial plan.
The number one thing I always do with my salary as soon as I get it is to take myself a present. Anything from a new board game to a new watch I saw the other day at the mall. That's a gift for all my hard work that month. I also buy my kids a present, usually a new toy, and one for my wife too.
Then I take everyone on a weekend trip anywhere in Greece. We live like kings and queens for two days.
Of course, it goes without saying, that I never check the balance in my bank account.
When the money starts running low, it's time to pay the bills. I pay as many of them as I can and the rest gets deferred for the next month. Am I worried? Not at all. I can always rely on a friend for some help or in the unlikely event of an emergency, I can always go to the bank and take out a loan. I know I'll have to pay them back with high interest, but life is short. Sometimes I play games of hazard like roulette or some poker. Sometimes lady luck smiles on me and I win a few euros!
Usually, at the end of the month, I'm left with empty pockets, but as I said before, life is short and we're not going to live forever.
Το summarize, spend money like crazy, never have an eye to the future,
and never ever listen to my advice! :)
This article was only for practice!
Thanks for reading and I hope I didn't make a lot of mistakes with this one! :)
Dimi, that was fun to read and I can see that you took some risks with your English and they paid off. Despite some corrections, it read very naturally and was also quite humorous and light. Bravo!
Thank you! :)
