Guessing Words from Elements of a Picture
Hi everyone!
You've probably already faced a situation in which you've wanted to express something you would have liked to talk about with someone, but you haven't known the exact word for what you would have liked to say. What do you do in this case? To me, I try to explain with my own words by describing the picture that depicts the stuff itself.
Thus, I've got the idea to try to describe the elements of a picture that I don't know the vocabulary. The goal of this exercise is to manage to communicate what I mean even though I don't know the exact word for this.
Let's get started!
As you see, it's a pile of fruits. Firstly, I will mention those which I am sure of the right English word. There are a lemon and a kiwi on the right and an apple and an orange on the top of the picture. In the foreground, there is a pear.
I realize that I don't know the exact words in English for the other fruits. I'm a little embarrassed because I hadn't expected that I don't know them. What it naturally comes up to me is the French words.
Anyway, I would like to know if this kind of exercice works well.
On the left on the picture, I would say there are white and black grapes. They are used for making white and red wine.
On the left and below, I'd say it's peach, but I'm not sure. Next to it, there is an orange-colored fruit, smaller than an orange. There are little chunks filled with juice inside and in French, we call that "clémentine" or "mandarine".
The fruit in the center reminds me tropics. Its shape looks like an orange-colored ball, not totally round, with green leaves on the top. When you cut the fruit, you will notice it's yellow inside. In French, we call it "ananas". I won't look up for the translation. Tell me if you've guessed it.
Finally, there are still three fruits remaining. The first one is just above the kiwi and it's red. I'm not sure what it is, but I'd bet for the tropical "grenade" fruit. For the two last fruits, on the right, they are green. The one on the left, I have no idea what it is ^^ and the other, maybe it's a big green apple.
That's all for this post. What do you think about this kind of entries? I think it could be a way to exercise to express something we don't know the word and improve us for a better communication. Rather than looking up a word for the translation each time we don't know, it avoids to stop the conversation and on the contrary to, it helps to keep it up.
Thanks for reading this.
Hi Michael! I think that this is a very good idea. Sometimes I even forget words in my native language and have to stutter instead of being able to describe what I wanted to say with other words. So I'd say the ability to describe things in any language is very beneficial. Some time ago, I saw someone posting "Guess My Word" in Spanish. I also did some posts like this in Portuguese. I think it's a good exercise :)
Hi Linda! Thanks for your feeadback and your corrections :) Totally, I find it's quite difficult to write or speak quicky without thinking or sluttering like you said. Often, our brain has the information stored somewhere, but knowing how to find it is harder
