This is my first post with a tag "Multilingual book club".
Now I've read four chapters of "The shadow of the wind" in English and got that first impression of a book, when you can estimate the difficulty of the text and the whole process of reading.
I can say with honesty that it was wonderful reading full with pleasure and excitement. I really enjoy the plot and what is really important that I can cope with the level of English this book suggests.
Nevertheless, I get to the plot and don't need the support in Russian, my native language, it's really important to go back to the first chapter and go deeper to the core of this brilliant vocabulary of the novel. Robin shared this intensive approach of language learning. I totally agree with him. Mostly my opinion based on my own language learning experience. Here, I want to share my language learning experience.
I've learning German for two years extensively from scratch. I read and listened a lot in German. But I did it more in extensive way when I got the plot or idea I went further. I got the feeling of a language and could read simple texts in German, but my speaking skills were really bad. Now when I wanted to refresh my German I started to use an intensive way of learning and paid more attention to vocabulary. It helps enormously in speaking.
So, that is my German language experience. I hope, one day I will read "The shadow of the wind" in German, but now I focus on my English and this multilinguag book club is a really motivating and encouraging space of self-improvement.
That is better than me, I am trying to read the book in russian. It is currently eleven thirty at night and I haven't even gotten past the first page but to be honest I can understand more than I expected. Also is there supposed to be a time limit for when we finish certain chapters for the book club? That might help me go faster so I am just curious.
I follow Robin's youtube videos and know that there aren't any announcements concerning time limits at the moment. He says that he will keep unhurried pace for multilingual book club. So that's most people find pleasure in reading. Everybody who reads faster can do it in their pace. I agree with you. Time limits is really motivating. I read some post with the tag "multilingual book club" and knew that there were people who read 10 chapters. It's just amazing!
