This morning I read an article about the microorganisms that inhabit our respiratory tract. It is well known that microorganisms live not only on our bodies but also inside them. However, until recently, most attention has been paid to bacteria that threaten our health. But there are also bacteria that don't harm us and we don't even benefit from them, they are just there. Such genus of bacteria the researcher who was interviewed in the article finds captivating. She dedicated her research to exploring them. One of such bacteria is the bacteria living in our respiratory tract called Prevotella. The researcher and her team have found out that this genus of bacteria had been misclassified. This means that Prevotella are not obligate anaerobes as it was previously thought but can actually survive in an oxygenated environment. Besides that, the researcher and her team are interested into studying relationships between infectious diseases in the airways and microbiomes. As it is well known, microbiomes vary from person to person and therefore responsiveness to therapy varies too. So, the researchers are also actively working in this area.
