All of a sudden, a song began to be heard from the back of the car. Somebody was singing an old blues with a hand stretched out and proceeding to Jim. When the man was at Jim's seat, he dropped a couple of dollars on the man's hand. The man thanked him and kept going ahead. Nobody else gave the man even a coin. Everybody was staring ahead, some at their newspapers which were just burning papers, others at the tips of their worn shoes.
