Psychic Viruses

by

Today I finished reading the book “ Psychic Viruses” by Richard Brodie. I already knew that the term “ meme” was introduced to the science by Richard Dawkins, but I didn't know that there is such a scientific area as memetics. Under the term “meme” we understand cultural information that is spread from one mind to the other like a virus. Memetics explores the topic deeply and helps people to weaponize themselves against memes that aim to misuse people's minds therefore their lifes for their own sake. Just like genes memes have only one goal to replicate and they don't care about people's lifes. TV and other mass media are one of the most effective methods for memes spreading and replication. Unfortunately, I can see the devastating results of the replication of parasitic memes in my country and in my own life. Fortunately, there are ways to avoid being misused by parasitic memes, but these methods should be introduced to people as early as possible. I'm speaking of science and critical thinking. Parasitic memes are very easy to spread because they aim at the most sensitive points in peoples life. These sensitive points are instincts that became the part of us during our evolutionary history. There are such needs as nutrition, reproduction, safety and crisis. When we analyze TV and other mass media carefully, we will inevitably notice that these instincts are used by mass media in order to infect us with memes and manipulate us. They try to program us to do things that make us become puppets in their hands. Maybe they also don't understand it because during evolutionary development we inevitably learned to manipulate others in order to survive. But memes that are being spread develop evolutionarily too and they want to infect human minds like viruses in order to replicate and survive. The only way not to become a victim of a parasitic virus is to learn to think for yourself and to think scientifically.
