Learning To Find My Way One Country, One Mistake and One Kindness At a Time
Day 0 β How a Dream Became Reality
My curiosity and spontaneous nature have always been both a blessing and a curse. Yet looking back, they were probably the very reasons why I finally found the courage to pursue a dream I had carried with me since childhood.
When I told my family and some close friends at the end of 2024 that I was going to pack my backpack and travel through Asia alone for several months, the reactions were very mixed. Some people simply stared at me in disbelief, while others immediately declared me crazy. The ones who truly know me, however, wished me an unforgettable journey β with only one small request: that I would eventually come home and not suddenly decide to start a completely new life somewhere else. After all, they know my slightly concerning level of spontaneity very well.
I nodded. But I could not make any promises.
From that moment on, my thoughts revolved almost entirely around the trip. Often late into the night, I'd sit in front of my laptop researching possible destinations, entry requirements and routes. My head was buzzing with questions: What vaccinations would I need? Would I need a visa? What apps would be useful abroad? What cultural differences should I be aware of? And most importantly: How would I actually get from point A to point B?
Of course, there were also countless practical things to organize. An international driving permit, travel insurance, copies of all my important documents and all those little things you never think about until you suddenly need them. The further my planning progressed, the longer my to-do list became.
Meanwhile, people continued to question my plans or simply laughed at some of my ideas. And honestly, I could understand their reactions. After all, I was planning to put my life in Germany on hold for several months and travel to another continent completely on my own for the first time.
And even though I still had more questions than answers: When exactly would I leave? Which countries would actually make it onto my final route? And when would I eventually return home? Deep down, I was already bursting with excitement and mentally packing and repacking my imaginary backpack multiple times a day.
To some, it probably seemed like my plans were nothing more than words, as I continued living my everyday life as usual. But what almost nobody knew was that every evening I sat in front of my laptop, tracking flight prices like a hawk watching its prey. I compared countless connections, set up price alerts and waited for the perfect moment to finally book.
And then, the moment I had been waiting for finally arrived. Among countless browser tabs filled with flight comparison websites, there it was: the perfect ticket. The price was too good to ignore. So I did what every responsible adult would do: I booked it immediately. I was so happy I could have cried. In just one week, I would be travelling to the other side of the world!
There was just one tiny problem. Instead of booking my flight for the following week, I had accidentally booked it for a month later. Apparently, my adventure wasn't quite ready to begin yet. At least I had another month to rethink my packing list, watch far too many travel videos and discover even more places I suddenly wanted to visit.
When I finally took my seat on the plane to Kuala Lumpur with my fully packed 40-litre backpack and a healthy case of nerves and at least twice as many butterflies in my stomach, I could not stop smiling. A dream I had carried with me since childhood was finally becoming reality.
At that moment, I had no idea that this journey would change me in ways I could not yet imagine and become one of the most beautiful experiences I would ever have.
