He has understood his smallness, and for the rest of his life, he will be thirsty for more of that same feeling. Now a couple in their seventies step into the hall. The woman is small and straight-backed as if she had been a ballet dancer before, and the man has a high forehead, a neat white mustache and probably a tiny capacity to be surprised. They stand at the edge of the hall, and the woman glances at the man frequently, probably to figure out what he thinks of what he sees and so what she should think. People walking together in a museum look at the art through each other all the time.
