The sound to which I awakened wasn't unusual. Of course, the large wooden house was never quiet. The wood creaked and banged depending on the temperature and humidity; there was nothing strange about that. Even the floorboards could creak, so the progressive cracking sounded like footsteps. What I heard was a clang that was made when somebody dropped something. Only the thought that there was somebody else creeping in the house made me completely awake. One of the displays was alive, and from it, I saw that it was a few minutes to three o'clock in the morning. I was sitting still and tried to prick up my ears. Bergdahl was already an old man; he had probably stumbled on the way to the bathroom to pee. There wasn't, however, a noise heard from the pipes; only the wind was humming outside.
