Kello läheni keskiyötä, kun Koski avasi kotinsa oven. Hän varoi, etteivät kilisevät avaimet herättäisi Marikaa ja lapsia. Koski lähti hiipimään keittiötä kohti. Lastenhuoneen oven alta kajasti yölampun valoa. Hän hapuili kädellään oviaukkoa. Onneksi reitillä ei nyt ollut leluja, joihin olisi voinut kompastua. Tai joita voisi vahingossa potkaista, ja kolinaan heräisi koko perhe. Hän arveli, että Johannan kissat saattaisivat arvostaa hänen onnistunutta pimeäsuunnistustaan.
It was almost midnight when Koski opened the door of his home. He was careful with the jingling keys not to wake up Marika and the children. Marika had been struggling with the sleep problem again and complained that she couldn't concentrate on her work. The work schedule was tight, and she had to be sharp and proactive every day. There wasn't yet any discussion about the extension of Marika's fixed-term employment contract, and she was afraid of becoming unemployed again. Koski took off his snow-dropping shoes and carefully put his coat on a chair in the hallway. It wasn't worth stuffing it in the closet, the hangers would rattle against the wall, and one of them would probably crash to the floor when he couldn't see in the darkness where his hand would push. Koski started to creep toward the kitchen. From under the door of the children's room was the light of the bedside lamp faintly seen. He groped with his hand for the doorway. Thankfully, on the route, there were no toys now over which he could've stumbled. Or ones that he could kick by accident, and the whole family could awaken to the rattle. He thought that Johanna's cats would probably appreciate his successful navigation in the darkness.
