Charlotte ei tiennyt, millainen oli tavallinen lapsuus, sillä hänen lapsuutensa oli kulunut laitoksessa. Hän ei tiennyt, miksi äiti oli antanut hänelle suomalaisittain melko harvinaisen nimen: Charlotte. Äidin oma nimi oli Helena, mutta miesystävät kutsuivat tätä Helluksi. Äiti oli nuorena ollut kaunis, Charlotte oli vanhoista kuvista nähnyt. Yhdessä kuvassa äiti oli pitänyt Charlottea sylissään, muttei Charlottella tietenkään ollut tilanteesta mitään muistikuvaa, sillä hän oli pieni vauva. Seuraavat lapsuuskuvat olivat laitoksesta, jossa hoitajat ja muut lapset aina välillä vaihtuivat, eikä mikään ollut ihan pysyvää, vaikka hoitajat varmasti parhaansa olivat yrittäneet. Oli Charlotte kuitenkin saanut olla turvassa ja käydä normaalisti koulua, hänen ei ollut tarvinnut seurata avuttomana sivusta, mitä äiti teki itselleen.

Charlotte didn't know what a normal childhood was like because she had spent her childhood in an institution. She didn't know why her mother had given her a name which was quite rare in Finnish terms: Charlotte. Her mother's name was Helena, but her male friends called her Hellu. She was beautiful when she was young; Charlotte had seen that in old photos. In one photo, Charlotte was in her mother's arms, but she, of course, had no memory of the situation because she was a little baby. The photos of the following childhood were from the institution where the carers and other children always changed occasionally, and nothing was completely permanent, though the carers had certainly tried their best. Charlotte, however, could be safe and go to school normally; she hadn't had to watch from the side helplessly what her mother did to herself.
