language learning

Playing with words in a foreign language can sometimes be risky. Native ears are very demanding and won't overlook the smallest detail, even if they completely understand what you're trying to say. The logic of non-native speakers —often absurd, though not always— is actually pretty similar to the logic of native-speaking children in any language.

That's why we as adults often feel uncomfortable making mistakes when speaking languages we don't fully master. It can make us seem dumb or childish because, in our cultures, people expect us to express ourselves correctly, or at least at a level above that of children. It's a matter of identity, pride, and social perception. But if you ever decide to put aside your pride, and ignore others' opinions of you for a little while, I guarantee your language learning will feel infinitely less tedious and boring . In the end, it's about playing a game, just like children do. Of course we don't have those cute faces and Smurfette's voice in our arsenal to soften the blow to the native ear, but we do have other capabilities and skills we've developed over the years. Still, in an average month of language learning, you'll get comments of all kinds in this respect. These are some of my favorites from my collection:

I know what you mean, but we just don't speak like that.

Again, that's not how we say it.

Sorry, that didn't land.

What do you mean?????

A more natural way to put it would be...

You could also say...

You do you.

Even natives mess this up sometimes, so don't worry.

That sounds a bit too formal for everyday conversation.

Nice try, but no cigar.

The clearer and more idiomatic phrasing is...

... but if the author is aiming to create something that's non-standard and eccentric...

If those comments or other similar ones bother you, your journey to learn foreign languages might become an ordeal. Just think that you're playing a game where the best thing you can do is laugh it all off. Though you could also do the same thing to them when the roles are reversed and it's your ear that has the floor.
