Kun Seija oli toivonut itselleen ystävää, hän ei ollut ajatellut aivan tätä. Timon hiuksissa ei oikein ollut letitettävää, mutta ystävät heistä silti tuli. Aamulla Seija käveli siskojen kanssa kouluun, mutta koulun pihalla he hajosivat kolmeen ilmansuuntaan omien kavereidensa seuraan. Timo saapui yleensä myöhemmin, joten Seija odotteli häntä koulun pihalla olevan koivun alla. Timo menikin yleensä suoraan Seijan luokse. Heidän oli helppo olla toistensa seurassa. He tuntuivat olevan monista asioista samaa mieltä ja heistä oli hauska keskustella esimerkiksi politiikasta. Timolla oli vahvoja mielipiteitä, mutta se ei haitannut, kun ne olivat aivan samoja kuin Seijallakin. Jos muut koululaiset jollain tavalla ihmettelivät ystävyyttä, siitä ei ainakaan kukaan koskaan suoraan sanonut. Joskus joku kuiskutteli kaverilleen heitä katsoen tai vihelteli vihjailevasti heidän lähellään, mutta muuten he saivat olla aivan rauhassa.

When Seija wished for a friend, she didn't think about this at all. Timo's hair didn't really have anything to braid, but they became friends anyway. In the morning, Seija walked to school with her sisters, but in the school yard, they parted in three directions to join their own friends. Timo usually arrived later, so Seija waited for him under the birch tree in the school yard. Timo usually went straight to Seija. It was easy for them to be with each other. They seemed to agree on many things, and for example, they thought it was fun to talk about politics. Timo had strong opinions, but that wasn't annoying when they were totally the same as Seija's. If other schoolchildren were surprised at the friendship somehow, at least nobody ever said it directly. Sometimes, somebody whispered to their friends looking at them or whistled near them suggestively, but otherwise they were completely left alone.
