Kesä meni nopeasti. Seija liikkui paljonkin pienen kylän raitilla ja autteli vanhempiaan kaupalla, mutta vaikka hän oli nähnyt ikäisiään, hän ei ollut päässyt tutustumaan keneenkään. Niinpä Seija odotti koulunalkua yllättävän innokkaana. Hän oli tottunut vaihtamaan koulua, joten se ei juuri jännittänyt, mutta hän toivoi kovasti saavansa ystävän. Sellaisen, jonka kanssa voisi viettää aikaa omassa huoneessa, letittää hiuksia ja jakaa salaisuuksia. Ensimmäisenä kouluaamuna Seija istui ruokapöydässä, mutta ei saanut syötyä oikein mitään. Kaija mässytti leipää ja Pirkko ryysti mansikkasoppaa, mutta Seijalle ei maistunut. Äiti ja isä olivat menneet jo myymälälle, joten kukaan ei ollut moittimassa. Seija oli pakannut olkalaukkuunsa kangaspenaalin eikä olisi millään malttanut odottaa pikkusiskojaan. Lopulta kaikki olivat valmiita lähtöön.

The summer went by fast. Seija walked around the main road of the small village a lot and helped her parents with the shop, but although she had seen those of her age, she hadn't got to know anybody. So, Seija waited for the start of the school with surprising enthusiasm. She was used to changing schools, so it wasn't really exciting, but she hoped to make a friend so much. One with whom she could spend time in her own room, braid hair and share secrets. On the first morning at school, Seija sat at the dining table but couldn't eat anything properly. Kaija munched on the bread, and Pirkko slurped the strawberry soup, but Seija had no appetite. Her mother and father had already gone to the shop, so nobody was scolding. Seija had packed the fabric pencil case into her shoulder bag and wouldn't have been able to wait for her little sisters in any way. In the end, everybody was ready to go.
