Äidistä on tullut enkeli, Paolo ajatteli. Kaikista hyvistä ihmisistä tulee kuoltuaan enkeleitä. Mutta suutari Salvatore oli sanonut, että enkelin ymmärtää vasta vuosien päästä. Salvatore tietää, on elänyt täällä koko ikänsä, yli seitsemänkymmentä vuotta. Paolo uskoi häntä ja kävi takaisin sänkyyn. Mutta uni ei tullut. Hän ihmetteli, miksi äidin kuolema itketti niin vähän. My mom has become an angel, Paolo thought. All good people become angels when they die. But the cobbler Salvatore had said that one could only be aware of an angel years later. Salvatore knows that; he has lived here all his life, for over 70 years. Paolo believed him and went back to bed. But he couldn't sleep. He wondered why his mother's death made him cry so little. What really made him cry was that he would have to stay in this miserable village for the rest of his life, at least 60 years. When he is at the age of his father, nobody will be here. Everybody will die - his father, the cobbler Salvatore, the neighbor Filippo, the pastor, the teacher... He would take care of the bar, standing behind the counter and waiting for somebody to come, the door would be open and from there, he would see a little of the road, the church, the mountains and the sky, and the old dog Toto would come to glance inside through the door all the time.
