Karri avasi ulko-oven. Heidän asunnossaan ei ollut mitään eteistä tai tuulikaappia, vaan suoraan keittiöstä päätyi ulos rapuille. Siellä seisoi kaksi miestä, joista toinen tönäisi Karrin rajusti taaksepäin ja tuli sisään. Hän oli kookas ja epäystävällisen näköinen. Ja ovea ei ehkä olisi saanut avata näin luottavaisesti tähän aikaan, sen Karri tajusi liian myöhään. Vastenmielisen näköinen rohjo tuijotti häntä uhkaavasti ja virnisti.

Karri opened the front door. Their apartment had no hallway or windbreak room but led straight out of the kitchen to the stairs. There were two men standing; one of them pushed Karri back violently and came inside. He was tall and looked unfriendly. There was reckless impudence in the way that he looked around and settled down. Only now did Karri realize he was afraid. He had lived for his whole life before in a small village in Kainuu, where even locking the doors at night had seemed unnecessary. Everybody knew the other, and nobody was a danger to anybody. Bears, for example, could be scarier than people. If you encountered a female bear together with her cubs, you could walk away carefully by slowing down your steps. In the capital city area, he had to learn new ways right away. He had to bring even a bicycle inside at night because bicycles would be stolen in spite of the locks. And perhaps he shouldn't have opened the door so confidently at this time of the day; Karri realized that too late. The big, disgusting-looking guy stared at him threateningly and grinned.
