Karri kimposi pystyyn ja tuli keittiöön. Pöydällä oli lappu, jossa luki vain yksinkertaisesti kiitos. Sen lisäksi siinä oli kaksi kahvikuppia lautasineen ja lusikoineen, toinen oli puhdas ja toisesta oli juotu. Karri veti farkut jalkaansa ja juoksi ovelle. Kirsikkaa ei enää näkynyt. Karri juoksi perään postilaatikoita kohti, ja tajusi siellä valinneensa väärän suunnan. Oikotietä mäen yli ei kannattanut enää lähteä tutkimaan, tytöllä oli jo liikaa etumatkaa. Karri palasi kohti sitä vihreää möhkälemäistä laatikkoa jonka nurkassa hänen kotinsa oli. Se ei näyttänyt rumalta. Oikeastaan matalien talojen ryhmä suurten koivujen alla oli omalla kummallisella tavallaan viihtyisä. Hän tiesi nyt, että täällä asui Kirsikan kaltainen ihminen, jonka kanssa saattoi jutella kuin Mikan kanssa ennen. Hän muisti tytön silmät ja niiden vilpittömän, harmaan katseen. Koko seutu tuntui sen takia ystävällisemmältä.
