Onkohan minussa jotain vikaa? Karri pohti melkein huolissaan. Eikö minun pitäisi olla innoissani lähentelemässä tuota Kirsikkaa, ainakin yrittää? Melkein kaikki pojat kai jo ovat tässä iässä kokeneempia niissä asioissa kuin minä. Mutta totuus oli, että Kirsikka oli kiinnostava monella muulla tavalla, mutta ei siinä mielessä. Tytön laihuus, nälkäisyys ja kodittomuus oli liikuttavaa, hänen reipas asennoitumisensa tuntui urhoolliselta. Hän vaikutti myös ihmiseltä jonka kanssa voisi jutella kaiken maailman asioista, mutta ei tytöltä, jonka viereen sänkyyn tuntisi vetoa. Poikaa hymyilytti kun hän muisti miten Kirsikka oli vakuuttanut heräävänsä helposti ja lyövänsä lujaa. Sen hänestä kyllä uskoi. Hän oli hennosta ja sievästäkin ulkonäöstään huolimatta kuin poika. Ei sellaista lähennellyt.

Is there something wrong with me? Karri wondered, almost worried. Shouldn't I be excited about coming closer to that Kirsikka, at least try? Almost all boys are probably already more experienced in these things at this age than me. But the truth was that Kirsikka was attractive in many other ways but not in that sense. The girl's skinniness, hungriness and homelessness were touching, her brisk attitude felt brave. She also seemed like a person you could talk with about things of all the world, but not like a girl you would feel drawn to sleep next to. The boy smiled when he remembered how Kirsikka had assured him that she woke up easily and hit hard. He believed that about her. She was like a boy even though she looked fragile and even cute. She was far from such a thing.
