Mirja hymähti mielessään. Hänelle, jos jollekulle, vuosi tosiaan oli ollut raskas. Mirja muisti, kuinka hän oli vuoden viimeisenä päivänä viettänyt iltaa Matin kanssa: he olivat saunoneet, laittaneet tavallista juhlavampaa ruokaa ja kaataneet lasilliset viiniäkin. He olivat valvoneet myöhään, seuranneet televisiosta uuden vuoden vastaanottoa Senaatintorilla ja vuorokauden vaihtumisen jälkeen toivottaneet toisilleen hyvää uutta vuotta. He olivat miettineet, mitä alkava vuosi toisi tullessaan. Kumpikaan ei ollut arvannut, että se päättyisi niin kuin päättyi. Matti oli valitellut kipuja jo tammikuun lopulla, ja maaliskuussa, useiden lääkärikäyntien ja erilaisten tutkimusten jälkeen, hänestä oli löydetty kasvain.

Mirja snorted inwardly. For her, if anybody, the year had indeed been tough. Mirja remembered how she had spent the evening with Matti on the last day of the year: they had taken a sauna, prepared more festive food than usual and even poured glasses of wine. They had stayed up late, watched the reception of the New Year at Senate Square on TV and after the change of the day, wished each other a happy New Year. They had wondered what the new year would bring when it came. Neither of them had guessed that it would end as it did. Matti had already complained of pains at the end of January, and in March, after several visits to a doctor and various tests, a tumor had been found in him.
