Kauko tuli ajatelleeksi mitä tapahtuisi jos hän rakastuisi Annikkiin. Nimenomaan rakastuisi, hän ajatteli. Olisiko se ylipäänsä vielä mahdollista? Sellaista tapahtui. Ainakaan se ei olisi toivottavaa. Suurimman osan aikaa ihmisen elämästä rakastuminen ei ollut toivottavaa. Sitä sattui ihmisille, joilla ei ollut muuta tekemistä, jotka eivät olleet mukana isommassa tapahtumisessa tai joilla arvot olivat sotkeutuneet. Ja taas, niin kuin niin monta kertaa ennenkin juuri tällaisina hetkinä illalla hänelle tuli vastustamaton halu tehdä viimeinkin päätoksensä ja ilmoittaa lähtevänsä Afrikkaan.

Kauko happened to think about what would happen if he fell in love with Annikki. He would exactly fall in love, he thought. Would it still be possible at all? Something like that happened. At least, it wouldn't be desirable. Falling in love most of the time in a person's life wasn't desirable. It happened to people who had nothing else to do, who didn't engage in a bigger event, or whose values were confused. And again, like so many times before, just at these moments that evening, he had an irresistible desire to make his decision in the end and declare that he was going to Africa.
