Atene katseli Ceciliaa kuin olisi miettinyt, oliko kysymyksessä elämäntuska vai jotakin konkreettisempaa. Kun myöhemmin muistelin ihmisiä, joiden elämään olin sotkeutunut, Atenea ajattelin suurimpana realistina. Hän oli kerran sanonut, että tuskin missään on paljon kummallisempaa. Mutta paitsi realisti Atene oli myös oikea ihminen, joka ei halunnut matkustaa siksi että hänen ei tarvinnut. Hän oli jo paikalla. Hänelle minä olisin voinut olla kateellinen, sillä hän oli saanut jotakin, jota ei voinut oppia. Mutta ei hänkään keksinyt muuta kuin täyttää kolme konjakkilasia.

Atene looked at Cecilia as if she was wondering whether it was a question of the pain of life or something more concrete. When I later recalled people in the lives of whom I'd been involved, I thought of Atene as the greatest realist. She had once said that there was hardly anything much stranger anywhere. But Atene wasn't only a realist but also a real person who didn't want to travel because she didn't need to. She was already there. I could've envied her because she had got something that nobody could learn. But even she couldn't think of anything but filling three glasses of cognac.
