Over My Dead Body

by

"The remains of 63 Khoi and San people, whose bodies were shipped to Europe between 1868 and 1924, have been reburied in South Africa"

Imagine after you passed away and were buried, some people from another country, calling themselves explorers or archeologists or whatever, came and took your body across the sea. They showcased it in a museum where millions of people visited to see your "corpse".

Or in worst cases, your body was used, not for scientific research, but pseudoscientific one as it happened with the bodies of those Khoi and San people quoted above.

How would you feel about it? Would your opinion be different if you were a king, a president or a cleric?

Over my dead body, I want no one to touch my body.

Many Egyptian mummies are displayed in museums around the world, and even in Egyptian museums.

Why would someone be interested in seeing the body of a dead person? It makes sense to see their temples, artifacts, or maybe their personal belongings but the body or mummy! Come on!

I came across some mummies in the Grand Egyptian Museum, but that wasn't something I stopped at and contemplated.

In my opinion, it's better to return the dead to their homeland and leave them alone.

Years ago, they used to divide the findings between Egypt and the excavation teams. I don't think this dividing happens nowadays, so why did it happen then?

Nasser, a previous Egyptian president, gifted the temple of Debod to Spain to express gratitude for their efforts in saving the Nubian monuments in the south of Egypt.

Seriously!? He gifted a whole temple as if he had inherited it from his parents.

No one has the right to sell or gift national treasures.

Many things were legally done in the past but it's not the case anymore. I think this should apply to monuments and historical, cultural treasures.

All the monuments and artifacts should be returned to their homes. The temple and all other monuments should be where they originally belong. Probably, museums in Europe and North America will be empty then.

Personally, the monument that I want back the most is the Nefertiti bust. I feel a special connection to Akhenaten and his family. There were some attempts to get Nefertit back from Berlin, but it hasn't worked so far.
