Puolessatoista kuukaudessa olin taas alkanut puhua oman seudun murretta. Väittelin ukin kanssa politiikasta. Kotona oleminen alkoi päivä päivältä tuntua arkisemmalta. Päivät kuluivat verkkaisesti kotipuuhissa. Aluksi se oli tuntunut ihanalta, mutta kun päivät muuttuivat viikoiksi, yksitoikkoiselta. Irja soitteli Lieksasta ja pyysi käymään. Meninkin, sillä Irja opiskeli valtiotieteitä Turussa, mutta illan istuttuani sen kanssa huomasin, ettei meillä ollut paljon yhteistä. Se opiskeli ja oli löytänyt Turusta itselleen poikaystävän.

In a month and a half, I had started again to speak my local dialect. I argued with my grandpa about politics. Being home began to feel more ordinary day by day. The days went by slowly with the household chores. At first, it had felt wonderful but, as the days became weeks, monotonous. Irja kept calling from Lieksa and asked me to visit. I went because Irja was studying political science in Turku, but after I sat with her in the evening, I realized that we didn't have much in common. She was studying and had found a boyfriend in Turku.
