Kesäiset päivät kuluivat verkkaisesti. Susanna vietti yhä enemmän ja enemmän aikaa nukkuen. Hereillä ollessaan hän haikaili takaisin unten maille. Karoliina koki tulleensa unohdetuksi. Äiti oli ehdottomasti iloisempi kuin aikaisemmin, mutta samalla myös poissaolevampi. Äiti kulki ympäriinsä kuin onnellisessa unessa. Hän kävi töissä ja kotiin tultuaan pyrki pääsemään takaisin nukkumaan mahdollisimman nopeasti. Hän oli alkanut käyttää unilääkkeitä saadakseen paremmin unen päästä kiinni.

The summer days went by slowly. Susanna spent more and more time sleeping. When she was awake, she yearned to go back to the land of dreams. Karoliina found that she had been forgotten. Her mother was absolutely happier than before, but at the same time more absent-minded, too. She walked around as if in a happy dream. She went to work and, after she came home, tried to get back to sleep as quickly as possible. She had started to take sleeping pills to manage to fall asleep better.
