"Russia has recruited 1400 Africans to fight for its front lines in Ukraine."
"40% of Gambian recruits were dead within 15 months."
Russia broke out an unjust war against Ukraine that it doesn't even want to fight by its own people. They don't even tell the truth to those whom they recruit. They attract Africans and other nationalities, exploiting their miserable lives through well-paid job offers.
When Africans are there, they find themselves trapped in a war that's not theirs. Others know about the ugly truth beforehand but they see no future in their own countries which are drown in unemployment, poverty and conflicts.
As they are promised $100,000 as death compensation, they hope, at least if they don't make it, their families will get some money that helps them survive.
But in fact, those who were already killed in the war, their families got only half of the money promised to them.
This reminds me of missionaries of Abrahamic religions in Africa, proselytizing poor people from one belief to another.
I knew a Kenyan guy who was a Muslim and converted to Christianity because he was offered a sponsorship for his education through proselytizing. He said he didn't mind moving from one sect to another as long as he got what he needed.
I don't know whether those missionaries were exclusive to Christianity and Islam. I've never seen some Buddhists trying to proselytize Africans to Buddhism (correct me if I'm wrong!). I haven't seen jews doing it, apart from those Zionists who try to beautify the ugly face of I*rael through humanitarian aid in poor African countries.
When people don't have food on their tables, their main focus shifts to survival. They have no energy to think of other "moral/ethical" concerns. Which God to follow, or which war they fight doesn't matter as long as they are provided with food. It doesn't mean they don't care, but they don't have other options to survive.
